Located on Sjaelland, the largest of the one hundred or so Danish islands,
I work from a well equipped workshop in the village of Lejre, near Roskilde, which is famous as an old Viking town and not too far from Copenhagen.
This part of Sjaelland is where some of the very first Vikings in Scandinavia settled, in the hills and rugged coastline wrought by ice ages past.
Gentle rolling, verdant hills, soft, beautiful coastline and the sea breezes all provide inspiration for my pipe making, both for the Neerup series of pipes and for the P. Jeppesen handmade pipes.
I started my pipe making career with Karl Erik in 1977 and he provided me with my first pipe making lessons. Indeed, I still use many of those ideas and methods today,
some thirty years later. Karl was a kind and generous teacher and colleague; not only did he get me started, but he continued to be a source of advice on pipe making until his death in 2004. I will always remember him fondly.
In 1983, I began working Erik Nording. To this day, I really consider my time with Nording a vital learning experience;
that’s when I really flowered as a pipe maker. Without Erik’s tutelage, friendship and guidance, I doubt I would ever have really become a pipe maker.
My main line of pipes is named Neerup, an old family name from my grandmother, a nice, clever, hardworking farmwoman. I come from a farming family, which serves as the foundation for what I do today:
diligence and hard work, so important on a farm, are the cornerstone of my pipe making success today.
Having spent decades in the workshop, I’m proud that both Neerup and the P. Jeppesen signature line are recognized and respected brands the world over.
Pipe making is a meditative experience for me. From the moment I open up a new sack of briar and begin to study the grain structure of various blocks,
I am already thinking about the shapes that I can me.
As I begin to carve and shape the blocks, I find myself transported into something of a creative zone. I love to listen to music, mostly rock and blues, as I work.
I’m also fond of studying racing cars and I enjoy a variety of outdoor sports, like multi-hulled sailboats, finish, bicycling, kite-surfing and skiing.
These activities really lend a lot to my pipe making, focusing me, but also providing ideas for shapes and ornamentation for the P. Jeppesen line and for new shapes and series for the Neerup line.
I really believe that the key to a beautiful pipe is getting the right proportions. There must be nice visual balance between shank and bowl,
it must sit comfortably in the mouth, it must feel ‘right’ when in the palm of the hand. And, of course, it must smoke with as little effort as possible.
Engineering of pipes is as important as aesthetics. The pipe must be designed in such a manner that allows the smoke to be drawn easily from the chamber, through the daft hole,
along the stem and to the smoker. I start with deep, nicely finished tobacco chambers that hold the right amount of tobacco for the size of the overall pipe,
providing a consistent distribution of heat. I drill the draft hole precisely, so that it meets perfectly at the bottom center of the chamber and it must be wide enough to provide an effortless smoke.
All of my stems are cut from acrylic or art amber with thin, comfortable buttons that are carefully slotted to distribute the smoke. This all combines to offer the smoker a cool, dry, highly enjoyable smoke.
The pipe-production are very all-rounded, but mostly shared in 3 main pipe-styles.
P.JeppesenHand-crafted custom pipes is carved by free hand, from the raw woodblock, I first draw the shape of the pipe to the grains structure and to my ideas of a design,
I prefer I cut to the device, that two pipes must never made identical in the shape, I must always find my idea’s by my own intuition and never look to what my colleges produce,
this give me always the best respond from costumers.
Each pipe is first hand-revolved to make the bowl shape and tobacco hole, then gently shaped and finished in many proceces by the traditional and concentrated work in hand-craft my masters learned me.
Sicilien bryer root are very useful for my pipes,
because of its nice grain and long term of grooving before being diged up and cut into blocks. Today I have my own exclusive import of quality bryere, I uses for all my pipe categoryes.
For decoration on my custom pipes , I uses sterling silver quite often on nearly all my P. Jeppesen handmade pipes,
to enhance the beauty of the pipe, The silver never takes over the look of the pipe,it is used only to enhance the overall look and feel.
For some of my pipe creations, I integrates exotic woods from the
middle of the Amazon region, the African Savannah, Asia or from the
local forests in Denmark. Working with these woods adds a bit of
excitement to the creation. The different smells and textures released
and felt from the woods, adds to the complexity of arrangements in a
positive way that truly makes each one of the pipes a labour of love and
different from another pipe made by my other Danish pipe-maker colleages
The Neerup serie pipes Neerup , is a number of pipes where the shapes always is designed by myself and mostly cut in greek bryere
I pick out from the best handmade shapes and then prepared the model for raw cutting on my copy mill,
After the machine cutting the shapes is sorted out for drillings and grading groups,
then grinded and finished the same way as a traditional quality handmade pipe, witch is a very many processes that could fill a book to describe.
I use to decorate some of the series pipes with even Brass or Nickel-silver rings,
I also design ornamentations of Olive wood or art ambers and coloured acrylicks, witch I find very attractive.
Serie pipes is often made with a easy exchangeable mouthpiece, to make a repair,or a change fast and easy for even me or the costumer,
all my mouthpieces is always designed by myself, I am always very exited to awaits and study my design from what my stem producer can work out after my amateur draws.
I make the series pipes graded in 3-4 groups after the grains structure and wood quality The series pipe finish is made in the group.1 semi-sand with smooth surfaces,
gr.2 finished in a polished smooth wax or oiled cured surface.
GR.3 and 4 also in polished carnauba waxed or oil-cured finished, all designed, finished and decorated using the old traditional Danish pipe production methods .
Neerup series-pipes are finished in smooth, full or semi-sandblasted finish and
at times, in a beautiful silk matt finish. All of Neerup's tobacco chambers
are sealed with a coat made of natural ingredients that help establish
the break-in process.
Besides making pipes, I also makes pipe
tampers, as well as handmade hunting and fishing knives.
When my time allow me to, I like to work in addition,
just like the pipes, the attention given to the creation of those
products are demanding, but the results I try to make everlasting.
To set of the grain structure the pipe-bowl and shank is finally coated with a sleight spirit stain and marble resin liquid with bee wax and finally polished with carnauba wax,
witch comes from the banana palm leaf, therefore brilliant smooth surface can be made properly.
On all Neerup and P.Jeppesen pipes the surface coating and stain liquids are of even vegetable or Spirits liquids,
this give the pipe no bad smell or after- taste and allows the wood to breath with gives the pipe a long time of nice smell.
The coating inside is also a mix of vegetable ingridiences, also for a nice smell on a new pipe being lighted up,
or I finish the chamber inside in natural with out any coating.
Neerup's grading system is a complicated one, and solely completed by
myself I observes many features of the pipe before grading it for
price. The size, decoration, pipe model and quality of wood all play a
part in his grading. my overall goal with my Neerup line of pipes
as well as my other products, is to provide the customer with a product
that meets and exceeds their expectations. I feels an obligation to
continue this fine tradition of making quality hand-crafted, in the respect
to the masters who has offered a lot their resources on his person and keeping the spirit of pipes from Denmark by providing a quality product at a fair price.
The future for Neerup pipes is to continue and develop his pipes and even knives all the time for the consumers who is interested in rare craftsmanship for fair money,
and to make the products that will stand beautiful for long time and will give the user a pleasure enjoy
and a great experience that they is proud to own and show their friends and keep in their pipe-collection.
Pictures and more will come soon.
